Pain is defined as an unpleasant or even anguishing experience, severely affecting a person at a psychophysical and existential level. People can experience pain as an acute acute, chronic or intermittent condition, or a combination of the three.
There is a dire need for public health to address pain as a disease itself, rather than a simple symptom, for the all over betterment of society. Pain surely worsens the quality of life of sufferers, but it also represents an economic burden, both for individuals and health care systems.
It has been estimated that individuals with moderate to severe chronic pain lose an average of 8 days of work every 6 months, and 22% lose at least 10 workdays. Considering the heavy toll that pain takes on us, we as pain physicians are trying to reach out and help out the society and treat pain as a disease and not only as a symptom.
