SSRI - A few Side Effects

SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) medications are a commonly prescribed class of drugs used to treat depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders. While they can be effective in treating these conditions, they can also have several occasional side effects.

The side effects disturb only a small percentage of people, and with the help of a doctor the side effects can be easily managed

The most common side effects of SSRIs include:

  1. Nausea and gastrointestinal problems: This can include diarrhea, constipation, and stomach pain.

  2. Sexual issues: SSRIs can cause difficulty achieving orgasm or delay in orgasm ( which can be beneficial for patients ), occasionally it may cause a decrease libido.

  3. Insomnia or drowsiness: SSRIs can affect sleep patterns and cause insomnia in some people, while causing drowsiness in others.

  4. Weight gain: Some people may experience weight gain while taking SSRIs. This can be easily managed with diet and exercise

  5. Dry mouth: SSRIs can cause dry mouth and an increase in thirst.

  6. Headaches: Some people may experience headaches as a side effect of SSRIs.

  7. Sweating: SSRIs can cause excessive sweating in some people.

  8. Anxiety and agitation: In rare cases, SSRIs can cause or worsen anxiety and agitation.

It's important to note that very few patients experience these side effects, and the severity of the side effects can vary from person to person. If you are experiencing any of these side effects or have concerns about taking SSRIs, it's important to talk to your doctor. They may be able to adjust your dosage or prescribe a different medication to help manage your symptoms.
